Requirements for an Undergraduate Primary Major, Supplementary Major or Minor in Gender Studies

Gender Studies offers students a primary major, supplementary major and a minor.  In the primary major and supplementary major, students choose a concentration in Arts and Culture, Religion and Family, or Gender and Society.  These concentrations allow students to focus their study of Gender to prepare them for their senior capstone project -  Senior Thesis, Senior Seminar or Capstone Essay.

Primary Major - 10 courses, 30 credit hours

2 required courses: Introduction to Gender Studies and Perspectives on Gender: Theory and Practice

Regular-track:
Capstone: Senior Seminar
Seven (7) electives:

  • Must take at least 4 courses in one of the following concentrations:
         Arts and Culture, or Religion and Family, or Gender and Society
  • At least 2 courses must be at 40000 level or higher
  • At least 1 course must fulfill diversity requirement (GSDI attribute)

Thesis-track:
Capstone: Students write a year-long thesis (GSC 48001/48002; 6 credits)
Six (6) electives:

  • Must take at least 4 courses in one of the following concentrations:
         Arts and Culture, or Religion and Family, or Gender and Society
  • At least 2 courses must be at 40000 level or higher
  • At least 1 course must fulfill diversity requirement (GSDI attribute)

Perspectives on Gender and Capstone courses are taken in addition to the 40000 level or higher courses needed

Elective courses can fulfill more than one elective requirement

 

Supplementary Major - 8 courses, 24 credit hours

2 required courses: Introduction to Gender Studies and Perspectives on Gender: Theory and Practice

Capstone: Senior Seminar or Capstone Essay
Five (5) electives:

  • Must take at least 3 courses in one of the following concentrations:
         Arts and Culture, or Religion and Family, or Gender and Society
  • At least 2 courses must be at 40000 level or higher
  • At least 1 course must fulfill diversity requirement (GSDI attribute)

Perspectives on Gender and Capstone courses are taken in addition to the 40000 level or higher courses needed

Elective courses can fulfill more than one elective requirement

 

Minor - 5 courses, 15 credit hours

2 required courses: Introduction to Gender Studies and Perspectives on Gender: Theory and Practice
Three (3) electives
