Shaping the Motherhood of Indigenous Mexico

Please join me on Thursday, September 12 at 4:00 pm in Hesburgh Center Room C103 as the Kellogg Institute launches my new book Shaping the Motherhood of Indigenous MexicoI also encourage you to invite your students to attend—this is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the on-the-ground realities of how a development project works or fails.

Joining me in a panel discussion will be Linda Whiteford (University of South Florida) and Gabriela Soto Laveaga (University of California, Santa Barbara). Dr. Whiteford is an anthropologist who looks at the effect of development and health policies on local people's realities. Dr. Laveaga is a historian who is an expert on the changing health care landscape in Mexico in the 20th century, bringing a time perspective to the discussion.

The book focuses on indigenous Mexican women and the effect of the conditional cash transfer program Oportunidades.  It covers a wide variety of issues such as international development, global health, public policy, education, family values, and women’s rights among others.

A reception will follow the panel discussion.
