Sparkle: Exploring Postfeminist Luminosity in Girls' Media Culture
This presentation aims to complicate Angela McRobbie's theory of the "postfeminist masquerade" via an analysis of the luminous visual aesthetics central to contemporary girls' media.
Mary Celeste Kearney is an Associate Professor of Film, Television, and Theatre and a Senior Fellow in the Gender Studies program. Trained in film, television, and cultural studies, Mary's research to date has focused primarily on gender, youth, and media culture. She is author of Girls Make Media (Routledge, 2006) and editor of Mediated Girlhoods: New Explorations of Girls' Media Culture (Peter Lang, 2011) and The Gender and Media Reader (Routledge, 2011). She is currently completing work on Power Chords and Groupie Chicks: Gender and Rock Culture, which will be published by Oxford University Press. Her essays have appeared in Camera Obscura, Cultural Studies, Feminist Media Studies, Journal for Children and Media, and the NWSA Journal. She is a Console-ing Passions board member and Founding Director of Cinemakids, a program for inspiring young media producers.
Gender Studies Research Workshops
In order to advance the program’s commitment to inter-disciplinary research and inquiry into the subject of gender, the Gender Studies Program is pleased to announce an upcoming series of research workshops. The events will include presentations by advanced undergraduates majoring in Gender Studies as well as graduate students and faculty members from a variety of departments who work in the area of gender and sexuality. The workshop will begin with the week’s presenter giving a brief lecture on his or her current research in the field, followed by a seminar-style discussion.
Workshops are held on Fridays from 12:00 – 1:00 pm in 339 O’Shaughnessy unless otherwise specified below.
