"The Beguiled"
Directed by Sofia Coppola
With Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Colin Farrell
Rated R, 93 minutes, DCP
Sofia Coppola remade a 1971 Civil War film (also titled The Beguiled) and spun it into a Best Director Award at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival despite consternation that her film whitewashed the Civil War. Nicole Kidman stands in for Geraldine Page as Miss Martha, the headmistress of an all-girls Virginian school in 1864, who has a student discover a wounded Union soldier (formerly Clint Eastwood, now Colin Farrell). Miss Martha allows the soldier to convalesce at the school and, along with her aid and five students, tends to the corporal as everyone vies for his attention in varying ways. Soon, jealousy begins to brew at the plantation amid debate about what to do with their prisoner of war.
