On behalf of the Less Commonly Taught Language (Bengali) at The Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures, you are invited to a Talk, titled "Creative Encounters, Artistic Practices and Its Public: Lessons from Colonial India" by
Dr. Sharmistha Saha, IIT-Bombay, India
on October 24, 2017 (Tuesday) in room # 211
DeBartolo Performing Arts Center, ND at 3.30 pm

Dr. Saha teaches in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. Her forthcoming book, Thinking Indian Theatre: Formation of a National Body through Cultural Practice in Colonial India, deals with issues of nationalism and the performative coagulation of communities. She is also a playwright, theater director, and actor. Her latest production, Her Letters, was commissioned by the Tagore Center in Berlin. She is currently the recipient of the Inlaks- Asia Art Archive 2017 fellowship for her next theater production.

This talk looks at how socio-political changes have consequences on law, through artistic processes that have been called ‘creative encounters’. The talk will be looking at aesthetic experience and the role it plays in the transformation taking the swadeshi jatra, a performance form that emerged during the early twentieth century. The swadeshi jatra not only opened up a political horizon for colonial Bengal but also complicated the understanding of performance within the colonial vocabulary.

The event is graciously supported by: GeNDer Studies Program, Department of Political Science, Department of Film, Television, and Theatre [PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS CLASS], Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies & The Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures

ps: On the same day, there is the Indian classical music concert at 7 pm in the Carey Auditorium, Hesburgh Library, ND.

Both the events have free admission. Please bring your friends/ colleagues, and also spread the news.
