Emily Remus Book Launch Final Edited

Congratulations to Emily Remus (Gender Studies Concurrent Faculty) on her Book Launch.

The Department of History will host a reception to celebrate the work of Professor Emily Remus with an introduction by Lizabeth Cohen, Howard Mumford Jones Professor of American Studies, Department of History, Harvard University.

A Shoppers’ Paradise, How the Ladies of Chicago Claimed Power and Pleasure in the New Downtown examines how women in turn-of-the-century Chicago used their consumer power to challenge male domination of public spaces and stake their own claim to downtown. The conflicts aroused by their growing presence in the city center shaped the urban landscape, the scope of women’s rights, and the rise of American consumer capitalism.
