In this engaging session, Mekhola Gomes will explore the intricate intersections of caste, gender, and property during the medieval period in India. Delving into historical dynamics, the talk will provide a deeper understanding of how power, social hierarchies, and identity were shaped through these critical factors. 

Mekhola Gomes is Assistant Professor of History and Asian Languages and Civilizations at Amherst College and a Visiting Scholar at the Initiative on Race and Resilience and the Medieval Institute at the University of Notre Dame. She is a historian of medieval South and Southeast Asia with a focus on India and the eastern Indian Ocean world. Her current book, Rule Through Blood: Property and Power in Medieval India, analyzes the intersections between caste, gender, property, and power in early medieval India (ca. 200–800 CE). She is also working on a project that explores social and economic interactions across the medieval eastern Indian Ocean through the inscriptional record.
