Paola Uparella Reyes, PhD candidate in the Spanish program in the department of Romance Languages and Literatures won the Victoria Urbano Graduate Student Essay Award by the International Association of Gender and Sexualities Studies. Her essay titled “The Guamanpumian Gaze and Colonial Shame (Guaman Poma's sketches of genitalia)” studies Guaman Poma's overlooked textual and visual representations of indigenous woman genitalia and annus (“güergüenzas”). This research is part of an upcoming article and of a chapter of Paola’s dissertation “Mirada, poder y genitalidad. La emergencia visual del género” [Gaze, Power and Genitality: the Visual Engendering of Gender] directed by Professor Carlos A. Jáuregui. Paola has presented this work at professor Jauregui’s graduate Seminar on Cultural Theory (2017), the Kellogg Institute’s Latin American History Working Group (organized by Professor Karen Graubart; Feb. 2018), the Universidad de los Andes (Aug. 2018), and the University of Illinois-Chicago (Sep. 2018).
