Jean Porter

Jean Porter teaches in the Theology Department, in which she holds the O’Brien Chair in Theological Ethics. Her research focuses on historical and theoretical questions having to do with the foundations of theological ethics, and especially on the natural law tradition. She addresses questions of gender, sexual orientation, and reproductive rights from this perspective, arguing that our judgements on these matters cannot be read off from human nature or scriptural tenets, but must be determined through an expansive analysis of the ways in which natural and conventional forces condition one another in the formation of normative judgements.
