Perin Gurel, Assistant Professor of American Studies, specializes in transnational American Studies with focus on the United States and the Middle East. She is also a research faculty fellow in Gender Studies at Notre Dame and a member of the Advisory Network for the Yale Initiative for the Study of Material and Visual Cultures of Religion. Gurel earned her Ph.D. in American Studies and a graduate certification in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from Yale University in 2010. Her research examines the intersections of vernacular culture with international relations. Her first book project, Good West, Bad West: Figuring America in Turkey, explores how conflicts over the concept of “westernization” in Turkey have intersected with U.S.-Turkish relations, cultural production, and sexual politics. Professor Gurel has held fellowships and grants from the Institute of Turkish Studies, the Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York, Dickinson College, and Yale University. Her work has appeared in American Quarterly, Journal of Transnational American Studies, and Journal of Turkish Literature, among other venues. She serves on the Editorial Board of The Journal of American Studies of Turkey. At Notre Dame, she teaches a variety of courses, including “Transnational America,” “Gender and Popular Culture,” “Humor and Power,” “Islam and America,” and “American Conspiracies.”
