Gender Studies is about understanding people, both yourself and others. Gender Studies teaches us how human identities are shaped by gender and related traits such as sex, sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, religion and nationality. Through Gender Studies, we not only strive to understand people better, but because of this endeavor, we hopefully become more understanding people.
Theories of Sexual Difference Course – Professor Janet Kourany
Extra Credit Assignment
One of the greatest things about being a Gender Studies major/minor is that it's NEVER boring. While studying transgenderism in Theories of Sexual Difference, we were given an extra-credit assignment: for one whole day to dress and act like a person of a different gender. It was optional, yet nearly everyone participated and went out for pizza at the end of the day. It was incredible to walk in someone else's shoes for a day and experience the looks, interactions, and expectations encountered by people of a different gender. I will never forget it. - Amanda Lewis '10
