Inspired by the Ugandan writer Monica Arac de Nyeko’s short story Jambula Tree, Rafiki hit the 2018 Cannes Film Festival with a splash premiering in the Un Certain Regard section. Sadly, the international success wasn’t felt at home as the Kenya Film Classification Board banned the film from its home country because it promoted lesbianism which is punishable by jail there—a political intrigue that swirls around this narrative film about two women who, as a deeper connection forms, see a mutually exclusive choice between companionship and safety speeding toward them.
This is a free but ticketed event.
