Please join Notre Dame's American Constitution Society and the Asian Pacific American Law Association in kicking off Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month on May 3rd @ 5 PM for the virtual event "The Rise of Anti-Asian Violence: Taking A Stand." We will be welcoming panelists Judge Pamela K. Chen (E.D.N.Y.), Chris Kwok (AABANY), and Karen King (AABANY) in discussing the recent rise of violence against the Asian Pacific American community.
Incidents of hate crimes against Asians and Asian-Americans in the U.S. have risen sharply since the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic. In 2020, anti-Asian hate crimes have increased by nearly 150% from the previous year. On March 16 of this year, a shooter targeted Asian-American businesses in Atlanta, killing 8 people, 6 of them Asian-American. In response to these events, movements like Stop Asian and Pacific Islander Hate have been gaining traction. The Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY), in conjunction with law firm Paul Weiss published a detailed report on the rise of anti-Asian violence in NYC. The panelists will discuss the findings detailed in the reports, measures that are in place to combat anti-Asian violence, and whether the new bi-partisan bill in Congress properly addresses the prosecution of anti-Asian hate crimes.
